Soundscape takes a unique approach to navigation by utilizing synthesized binaural audio cues that provide a 3D sound effect, giving users a deeper understanding of their surroundings beyond what traditional navigation apps can offer. We were thrilled to have been invited by Microsoft team to collaborate on such an important project in terms of mobility innovation.

Enhancing mobility with 3D audio.

Our goal was to provide to users comfort in unfamiliar spaces, supporting individuals in making mental maps and personal route choices. Through an iterative process, we validated and scaled our design explorations to ensure the final product was both functional and user-friendly.

From feedback
to function.

We started by conducting extensive user research to understand their needs and pain points when navigating their environment. Given that Soundscape is an audio-based app, we knew that design cues and spatial information delivery would play a critical role in creating a smooth and intuitive user experience. Interface designers and researchers worked side-by-side to make informed decisions during our iterations.

Designing with purpose.

We designed the app with simplicity in mind, featuring voice commands and adjustable sound settings to aid navigation. The interface boasts high-contrast visuals and large buttons, making it easy to use under any lighting conditions. Our minimalistic yet effective design focuses on user-friendly navigation that enhances the experience for all, particularly for those with visual challenges. Through continuous user feedback and testing, we ensured our app was not only functional but also inclusively designed for all users.

Building bridges with sound

Post-launch analytics indicated a significant improvement in user navigation experiences, particularly in complex environments. The app has not only enhanced the mobility of its users but also empowered them with greater independence, aligning with our mission to innovate for inclusivity.

Soundscape for community:
a collaborative future.

Soundscape’s journey took a remarkable turn in 2022 when it was made open source, marking a new phase of community-driven innovation. Pixelspace is thrilled to continue supporting this initiative under the consortium 'Soundscape for Community,' where we collaborate with a dynamic network of academics and corporations. As the consortium’s UX and design arm, we are excited to drive forward the mission of creating more inclusive and engaging user experiences.

More work.
